Aftercare guide
Dermal Fillers Aftercare
How to care for your skin after hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, what swelling and bruising to expect, and the warning signs to act on straight away.
Straight after treatment
You’ll see a change straight away, although the area will be a little swollen. The final shape settles over the next one to two weeks.
- Take it easy for the rest of the day.
- Avoid touching, pressing or massaging the area for 24–48 hours, unless John has asked you to.
- Keep make-up off the injection points for the rest of the day. When you start again, apply and remove it gently.
- A cool (not frozen) compress, wrapped in a clean cloth, helps if the area feels tender or swollen. Press gently.
- Stay upright for the first few hours.
- For mild discomfort, take paracetamol. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, as they can increase bruising.
The first 48 hours
- Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds.
- Avoid alcohol, which can make bruising and swelling worse.
- Sleep slightly elevated on the first night to limit swelling.
- Wash your face gently with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid scrubs and exfoliants for a week.
- Arnica cream or tablets may help bruising settle if you’d like to use them.
The first two weeks
- Avoid facials, dental work and other treatments on the area for two weeks.
- Stay out of strong sun and use SPF daily.
- Book your two-week review if anything needs refining — this is when the filler has fully settled.
What’s normal
- Swelling for 24–72 hours. Lips tend to swell more, for two to three days, and under-eye swelling can be more noticeable in the mornings for a week.
- Tenderness and mild redness, which settle within hours to days.
- Bruising, which usually fades within a week. Around the cheeks, under the eyes and the lips it can occasionally take up to two weeks.
- Small lumps or slight unevenness in the first couple of weeks while the gel settles. These usually resolve; anything that persists can be reviewed.
Longer term
- Wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin.
- Drink plenty of water and keep up a healthy routine to support your skin overall.
- Attend any follow-up appointments so John can check how things have settled.
