About Excess Sweating
Hyperhidrosis is sweating that goes well beyond what the body needs to keep cool — most often in the underarms, but also the palms, feet or forehead. It can be genuinely limiting: choosing clothes around it, avoiding handshakes, or feeling self-conscious in meetings.
Injections of a prescription muscle relaxant into the affected area temporarily block the signal that tells sweat glands to switch on. The NHS lists this as a recognised option where antiperspirants haven't helped. Sweating in the treated area reduces markedly for several months; the rest of the body continues to sweat normally.

- 03Restores confidence in clothing, meetings and social situations
- 04Quick appointment with no downtime
- 05Treats underarms, palms, feet or forehead — assessed individually
- 06Can be repeated when sweating returns
Is this treatment right for me?
This treatment suits people whose sweating is excessive for the situation, interferes with daily life and hasn't responded to clinical-strength antiperspirants. Because hyperhidrosis can occasionally have an underlying cause, the consultation includes a health history, and John may suggest a GP review first where appropriate.
You may be suitable if…
- You sweat heavily in a specific area regardless of temperature or exercise
- Antiperspirants and lifestyle changes haven't helped
- It affects your confidence, clothing choices or work
- You're not pregnant or breastfeeding
Your consultation will consider…
- Where and how severely you sweat, and how long it has been a problem
- What you've tried already
- Any medical conditions or medication that could contribute
- The number of injection points and dose needed for the area
What to expect
Before treatment
You'll have a consultation with John to discuss the area, your history and what you've already tried. Please shave the underarms a day or two before and avoid antiperspirant on the day, as the skin needs to be clean for treatment.
During treatment
The area is cleaned and, for larger areas, mapped into a grid. A series of small, shallow injections — typically 15–20 per underarm — is placed across the grid with a very fine needle. Each is a brief sting; the palms and feet are more sensitive, so John can discuss numbing options for those areas. The appointment usually takes around 20–30 minutes.
After treatment
You can go straight back to your day. The skin may be slightly red or bumpy for an hour or so. Sweating reduces gradually over the first one to two weeks rather than immediately.
Watch
Results & longevity
Sweating typically begins to reduce within a few days and reaches its full effect at around two weeks. The NHS notes that results can last several months; most people find the treated area stays much drier for around four to six months, sometimes longer, before sweating gradually returns and treatment can be repeated. The rest of the body continues to regulate temperature normally.
Recovery, side effects & aftercare
There is no downtime with hyperhidrosis treatment — most people return to work straight afterwards. Because the injections are shallow and spread across a wider area, you may notice more small bumps or pinpricks than with facial treatment, but these settle quickly.
Side effects
Common temporary effects are tenderness, redness and small bumps at the injection points. Some people notice slightly increased sweating elsewhere for a while. For palm treatment, temporary mild weakness of grip is possible and wears off. Infection or an allergic reaction is rare.
Aftercare
Keep the area clean and avoid antiperspirant, deodorant, hot baths, saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Don't rub or massage the area. You can resume your normal routine, including antiperspirant, the following day.
Please contact the clinic if you develop spreading redness, significant pain, swelling, or any weakness that concerns you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does sweating reduce?
Most people find the treated area becomes much drier — often to the point of not needing antiperspirant — with the full effect at around two weeks. Individual response varies, and John will review the result with you.
How long does it last?
Several months. Most clients return every four to six months, though some find results last longer. The interval can be planned once you see how you respond.
Does it hurt?
Underarm injections are a brief sting each and well tolerated. Palms and soles are more sensitive, so numbing options can be discussed for those areas.
Is it safe to stop my body sweating there?
The treatment only affects the small area injected; the rest of your body regulates temperature normally. The NHS recognises this as an established treatment for hyperhidrosis where other measures haven't worked.
Do I need to shave beforehand?
For underarms, yes — please shave a day or two before so the skin is clear, and skip antiperspirant on the day of treatment.
Can I go to work afterwards?
Yes. Apart from some small bumps that settle within an hour, there's nothing to see and nothing to stop you carrying on as normal.
What happens at the consultation?
John assesses the area and severity, goes through your history and what you've tried, and explains the dose and cost. Because this is a prescription-only treatment it is only offered after that assessment.
