About Under-Eye

The skin under the eyes is the thinnest on the face, which is why it shows tiredness first: fine lines, crepiness, dark shadows and a slightly hollow look. Filler isn't always the answer here — if the skin itself is the problem, adding volume can look puffy. Under-eye polynucleotides take a different approach, stimulating the skin to repair and thicken itself.

A series of tiny, shallow injections places polynucleotides across the under-eye area. Over the following weeks the skin becomes stronger, smoother and brighter, and dark circles caused by thin skin soften.

Is this treatment right for me?

This suits people whose under-eyes look tired, lined or crepey, or who have dark circles from thin skin rather than deep hollowing. Where the main issue is a hollow, tear-trough filler may be more appropriate — and the two are sometimes combined. John will assess which applies.

You may be suitable if…

  • The skin under your eyes looks thin, lined or crepey
  • You have dark circles or a tired look that make-up doesn't fix
  • You'd prefer to avoid filler in this area
  • You're not pregnant or breastfeeding and have no fish allergy

Your consultation will consider…

  • Whether the concern is skin quality, hollowing, pigmentation or puffiness
  • Any tendency to fluid retention under the eyes
  • A fish allergy, which rules polynucleotides out
  • Timing around social events, as the area is puffy for a few days

What to expect

Before treatment

Your consultation with John looks at skin quality — hydration, fine lines, laxity and texture — and your goals, and checks your medical history. Skin boosters are a course rather than a one-off, so you'll leave with a plan for the number and spacing of sessions. For a few days before, avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen and supplements such as fish oil where safe to do so, as they increase bruising.

During treatment

After numbing cream, John places a series of very small, shallow injections across the under-eye area on each side. It takes around 20 minutes. You may feel a slight sting as the product goes in, but it's well tolerated.

After treatment

The under-eyes will look puffy and a little bumpy straight afterwards — this is expected and settles over two to three days. The regenerative effect then builds over the following weeks.

Results & longevity

Some brightening can be noticed within days; the real change — smoother, thicker, less lined skin and softer dark circles — develops over two to three months as the skin rebuilds. A course of three sessions, two to four weeks apart, gives the best result, with effects lasting up to around nine months before a maintenance session. Results depend on your skin, age and lifestyle.

Recovery, side effects & aftercare

The under-eye area is more reactive than the rest of the face, so expect it to look puffy and slightly bumpy for two to three days after each session, with possible small bruises. Plan sessions away from important events.

Side effects

Small raised bumps at the injection points are expected and usually flatten within hours; occasionally they take a day or two. Redness, tenderness and small bruises are common and short-lived. Uncommon effects include a lump that persists longer, mild infection, or an allergic-type reaction. Because these products are hyaluronic acid or naturally derived, serious reactions are rare.

Aftercare

Leave the injection points alone for the rest of the day — no make-up, no touching or massaging unless John has asked you to. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam and alcohol for 24 hours, and stay out of strong sun. Keep the skin well moisturised and use SPF daily; it protects the result.

Please contact the clinic if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, a lump that grows rather than settles, or any skin colour change.

Downtime
Minimal — small bumps for a few hours to a day
Redness
Mild, settles within hours
Swelling
Puffiness for 2–3 days
Bruising
Possible small bruises, fade within a week
Normal activities
Same day; avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Polynucleotides or tear-trough filler?

If your under-eyes are hollow, filler lifts the hollow. If the skin itself is thin, lined or dark, polynucleotides improve the skin. Many people benefit from polynucleotides first, then a small amount of filler if still needed.

How long will I look puffy?

Two to three days, sometimes a little longer if you bruise easily. Sleeping with your head raised and a cool compress help.

How many sessions?

Three, spaced two to four weeks apart, then maintenance every six to nine months.

Will it fix dark circles?

It helps dark circles caused by thin skin, which is the most common type. Pigmentation-based darkness needs a different approach, and John will be honest about which you have.

Does it hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first. Each injection is a brief sting, and most people find the treatment very tolerable.

When can I wear make-up?

The next day. Keep the injection points clean and uncovered for the rest of the treatment day.

What happens at the consultation?

John assesses your skin, discusses what you'd like to improve, checks your medical history and recommends the product and course that fits — with clear pricing before anything is booked.
